One of my favorite things to do is to travel.  I have been to many different countries and cities in my life, but my favorite place is probably Rome, Italy.  It is such a beautiful citie with a very long and important history.  I recently visited the "Eternal City" over Semana Santa and saw many of its famous sights.

Perhaps the most famous sight in all of Rome is the Colosseum.  It is a very famous arena in which gladiators fought, in addition to other types of violent activities.  There are other Colosseums around the Roman Empire, but the one in Rome is much larger than the others.  It has been partially destroyed by invaders, but you can still see how gigantic the structure was.

Another interesting monument in Rome is that to the first king of unified Itally, Vittorio Immanuel II.  His monument is very controversial because it is very different from the other buildings of Rome.  First of all, it is much whiter than the old, brown monuments from the Roman Empire.  Second, it is much taller and more square than the buildings around it.  Because of this, people often refer to it as the "Wedding Cake" because it looks like a gargantuan, white wedding cake.  And lastly, an ancient Roman temple was destroyed to make room for the monument so many citizens were understandably upset about that.

The Trevi Fountain is one of the most beautiful fountains in the world.  It is carved into the front of a very angular building, but the fountain was made to look as if it were more organic than its attached edifice.  There are horses and gods and waves all winding away along the fountains smooth lines.  It is tradition to make a wish and then throw a coin over your shoulder into the fountain to ensure that it comes true.  Or maybe that's just to collect more money from tourists. :)

A little further away is the Roman Pantheon.  This building was made to house the Roman gods, but today it has tombs and Christian statues.  The dome of the Pantheon is much larger than other domes of its style.  In fact, it is the largest concrete dome in the world.  A sphere with a 90-foot (27.4 meter) diameter could fit inside of the pantheon.  That is how large the dome is!  The Romans were so good at using concrete that once the Roman Empire fell it took the world over 1000 years to perfect its use again.

Vatican City, the seat of the Catholic Church, is in Rome as well.  It is a very beautiful city/country with many famous works of art.  St. Peter's Basilica is the most famous building in the vatican.  It is much nicer than my old church at home.  In fact, it is one of the most impressive buildings I have ever been in.  There are letters near the top that appear tiny, when in fact they are over two meters tall!  People gather in the square out front to hear important announcements and for religous holidays.  The square long and straight, but has a a circular portion that is a little bit wider.

If you ever get a chance to visit Rome, you should!  It is my favorite city and I love it very much.  And make sure to get gelato from Giolitti's, near the Pantheon!

  3. Hello Daniel. Charo is making me write this as an activity of some sort. Ive never been to Rome myself. Really ive never been anywehere except Portugal and England. Youre lucky to have been to so many contries. Rome does look rather good with all its ancient monuments and all. The Colusseum look really cool. But you know the Romans did non.-violent things there like chariot racing and other more cultural activities. The only related place to your post ive been to is Italica in Sevilla, wich is moderately well known in Spain. Its construction wa ordered by emperor Hadrian, or had something to do with him anyway i cant quite remember. I quite enjoy history as you can see. Yes there was a good anfitheatre there, that was slightly similar to the Colusseum. Thats pretty much all i can say on the Roman topic.( oh and i couldnt do apostrophes because the keyboard was a bit broken )

  4. Hi!

I'm Veronika from 3rdA, I've lived in Spain for almost a decade but I'm originally from San Francisco, California.
I think that this entry is really interesting. I have never been to Rome but my parents have. I really want to go to Rome... I hope that i can go soon...
Well, anyway, my favourite place is probably my grandparents' lake in MIchigan. Its just outside of Detroit and its one of the last places where there's nothing built, Its a private lake and around it there are nothing but fields. There's so much wildlife, like deer, so many species of birds, etc. Lots of developers have tried to buy the lake but its been in my family for hundreds of years. They're actually three lakes. But the two smaller ones are kind of shared with some of my grandparents' neighbors. Here's a link to show you the lakes in the beginning of winter: https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Musson+Rd,+Howell,+M%C3%ADchigan,+Estados+Unidos&hl=es&ie=UTF8&ll=42.649763,-83.80333&spn=0.003137,0.004823&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=54.665451,79.013672&oq=musson+&hnear=Musson+Rd,+Howell,+Michigan&t=h&z=18

The biggest lake is my favourite. This is my favourite place because I have so many memories from when I was a little kid, going there in summer and seeing some of my cousins and second cousins, my aunts and uncles, my grandparents and staying in the R.V. that my granfather put there when we went to visit so we could stay there and waking up to deer grazing, chasing frogs and fishing with my grandmother, having barbecues... That's why my grandparents' lake is my favourite place. :)

  5. Hi! I'm Nieves from 3rd.
I've never been to Rome, but it looks like a beautiful place with many history which makes it more interesting. I really like to travel,in the future I'll travel around the world.
I've lived in Spain all my life, but I've moved a few times,I lived in Madrid during a year and I've changed of school seven times .My mum is from Chile so I went there and I love it! My family is from Valparaíso,near the sea, It's a beautiful city and the principal seaport of Chile. Is an ancient place and very colorful, because the houses are painted with different colours:yellow,red,green,black,blue...It looks like a huge rainbow! It's amazing.
I've been in Mallorca,Rumania and Hungary too,but the one I liked the most It's Hungary,It's the most beautiful place I've ever seen! Budapest is incredible,I saw all the important monumets,I've been in the thermal baths and I sailed across the Danubio.
Mallorca is a really nice place too, part of my family lives there. In summer it's full of tourist and it's the best place to go to the beach all day and go party all night.
Rumania it's not my favourite place, but I had good moments there, I've been in a little town for a week and the people there are very nice and friendly.

For me this is nicer isa eg the canary islands, plus it is bigger and the water is warm more jejeje. Well Daniel I hope you keep traveling and greeting your friend J. Saenz.

  7. Hello Daniel! Your post is very interesting. I've never thought that Rome could be so beautiful. If I could, I will try to go there and see those magnificent places. I love to travel too, but I just saw countries in Spain, Hungary and Romania. I cannot go to another countries because we have not family, like other people. I always wanted to go to UK, USA, Tokyo, France, Rome... But, I do not want to go to Australia. And well, I am sure, that one day, I'll go to all of these places. I don't know how can you travel a lot of times! :O You are really lucky! For now, I saw awesome places in the countries that I was.
When I went to Romania, I was shocked! Wow, That place is like... back to the past. The houses, some of them, are colourful, painted in blue, pink, yellow, green... Also, it has a special place for the ''gypsies'', they have enormous and majestic mansions! It's incredible! I went there, for the Comenius Proyect so I stayed in a friend's house. In this trip, I was really impressed because the houses are so huge... and also, they have apartments. It was funny, because they have little farms and orchards. Romania is a place to relax yourself, otherwise it has famous places, like the Bear's Cave and the Dracula's Castle. Each one has it story.

In Hungary, with the Comenius Proyect too, we went to the thermal baths. It is huge! It was funny: we were playing in the whirlpool. It was in the night, so it was more beautiful than if it was in the afternoon or in the morning.

And finally, in Spain, there are a lot of beautiful places. I want to talk about Pamplona. I was there this summer. We were in the Calle Estafeta, and we saw the bullfight! Two or three people had an accident...

  9. Yo Daniel,
I have also been to Rome but I didn't like it because the airport was very very awfull (I was only there to get on the next plane to Argentina so I didn't see the city).
Then, I went to Argentina and the plane arrived in Buenos Aires, where the air was very very nice.'Then I went to Cordoba (the one in Argentina), the city of my family. It took 9 hours to go there by bus. We celebrated christmas and new year there. After we went on a trip to Chile. We passesd Los Andes. They were enormous!
I saw the Aconcagua, the tallest pike. Then I went to the beach, in the Pacific ocean. The water was very very cold! Then I went to my crazy friend's house, he is a youtuber: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUMnJBpzzSM
Then, i went to Rome's airport and it was still awfull. Finally, I went back home

  11. Hi,
I agree with you that Rome might be the most beautiful city in the world, but I don't think it isn't the most beautiful place in the world. The most beautiful place i have ever been to was Thailand. And I don't mean the cities like Bangkok, I mean the nature there. The beaches in Thailand are incredible, the water is amazingly clear and the sand is very soft. The people there are also very kind. There are incredible palm tree forests and jungles there. If you go, there is even a great chance you'll run into an elephant! It is also very quiet there, except for in the cities. Although I enjoyed the beaches and nature most, I also recommend the cities, in Bangkok there are some amazing sights. I didn't enjoy the cities that much but i was about 3 when I went there so I think I would now. In my opinion Thailand is the most incredible place in the world.

I think that the most beautiful plance in the world is The Great Coral Reef in Australia. There is a lot of acuatic animals and the landscape is colourful. The corals are amazing and there you can be very quiet without thinking about the city. I have never been there, but Iwant to go so I searched information. It's awesome!!!

I liked the topic that you talked about. I love travelling too! :) I could be travelling all the time around the world, because it's so big, and there are so many place to discover. But I think that I've travelled a lot for my 15 years. I have been to England (Manchester and London-for me one of the cities that i liked more), Scotland (when I was too small and I can't remember), Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria and Portugal.I woul like to visit Rome too, because, as you describe it, it sounds very interesting! I've watched a short video about Rome and I think the best places are the Colosseum and the fountain. An of course, don't forget Gioliti's ice cream!! Hi!
I'm Esther. The Chilean Patagonia is very beautiful. One day I think I will go to Patagona and see the magnificent rock, mountains, lake, snow, etc...
This place is considered to be the 5th most beautiful palce in the world. I agree with this for me. It is the most beautiful place what I have ever seen.
The reflexion of the mountains in the lake grabs my attention.

In this place there's a mixture of different colours, because I can see the twilight and these colours make the mountains more impressive.

In this photo I can see the "Aurora's Blush" in the Chilean Patagonia, but I don't know if this is true I can't really see it.

In this other photo. I see the "Marble Caves of Patagonia", I love it, It is very beautiful the reflex and effect of the water relaxing.
I have a big desire to visit the Chilean Patagona. The lake is very beautiful in winter when the lake is frozen and this creates a block of ice like a mountain, but these mountains are like a waves.

In the future I would go to visit him, as it has some mountains, rocks and beautiful lakes. The views are incredible. Although you have to do quite cold, the snow is very white and clean.
I would also like to go to America to see Niagara Falls are beautiful, I want to know because they get color when it is night, I think it is the "Northern Lights". And I would also like to visit Paris, I love to visit the Eiffel Tower, say it has 4 floors and each floor has a different site.
